Week of Mourning in International Football Marred by Tragic Fan Deaths
A weekend of mourning in international football ended tragically, with the death of two fans in the stands during cup competitions in England (FA Cup) and Portugal (Taça da Liga).
The fans, supporters of Sporting de Braga and Norwich City, tragically lost their lives during their respective clubs' matches. The first case to emerge was reported from Leiria, Portugal, where the Taça da Liga "Final Four" was played.
As reported by Sporting de Braga, a fan collapsed in the Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa Stadium, the venue of the Taça da Liga final between Braga and Vitória Guimarães, which Braga won 2-1 after a comeback by Dorgeles. Portuguese authorities confirm that the fan suffered a medical emergency in the stands and was promptly attended to by medical teams.
Despite immediate medical attention, the fan was hospitalized and ultimately passed away due to cardiac arrest. Speaking in the media zone at the stadium, Antonio Salvador, the club president, declared: "I mourn the death of a Sporting de Braga fan who attended the hospital during the match and died of a heart attack. My deepest condolences to the family. Sporting de Braga is in mourning." In social media posts, the club reiterated: ""El SC Braga expresa su más sentido pésame por el fallecimiento de LuÃs Azevedo, socio del Club que falleció este sábado en Leiria tras un infarto"."
The second incident occurred Sunday during Norwich City's 5-1 victory
over Walsall in the FA Cup third round at Carrow Road. The club issued a statement: "We are saddened to announce the death of a local fan following the FA Cup match held this afternoon. Norwich City extends its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased fan.The statement further noted: "The club has informed the family and is collaborating with authorities to provide necessary support in this extremely difficult time. A sincere thank you to the medical staff, supporters, and staff who assisted during the emergency and will ensure continued care for those involved. Fans who witnessed the incident are encouraged to contact the club for support." The entire Norwich City squad expressed condolences: "Our deepest condolences to the family and friends."
