  • The earthquake, originating at a depth of about 60 kilometers, has caused strong tremors and cuts in the electricity supply
  • It has occurred in the same region devastated in 2011 by a deadly earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale and a subsequent tsunami that also caused a nuclear disaster.

Japan activated the tsunami alert on Wednesday night after registering a magnitude 7.3 earthquake off the coast of Fukushima and Miyagi, in the northeast of the country.

The earthquake was recorded at 11:36 p.m. (local time) at a depth of 60 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which also warned of a possible tsunami in the most affected area up to a meter high.

This is the same region that in March 2011 suffered the effects of the “triple disaster”, as the 9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami is known that left thousands dead and caused the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The earthquake was preceded by another earthquake of lesser intensity, and reached a high level of six on the Japanese scale, out of a maximum of seven and focused on measuring the agitation on the surface and the affected areas rather than the intensity of the tremor.

The Government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has immediately convened an emergency committee to examine the consequences of the earthquake.

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, in the process of dismantling since the 2011 nuclear crisis, announced that there had been no incident due to the tremor, as well as in other nearby atomic facilities.

Although for now there is no news of fatalities, there have been power cuts in some two million homes, including some 700,000 in the capital, Tokyo, where the earthquake has been felt with intensity.

In addition, several high-speed rail lines have been interrupted in the northeast of the country, while various sections of highways and the Tokyo Haneda airport have also been closed as a precaution.
